Renowned sarod player Shiraz Ali Khan returned to Kolkata after fleeing Bangladesh when the cultural venue where he was scheduled to perform was vandalised amid unrest in Dhaka, an episode that has sharpened concerns over artist safety and disrupted a cross-border cultural engagement.
Khan had travelled to the Bangladeshi capital for a recital intended to draw students, musicians and patrons of classical music. Hours before the programme, damage was reported at the venue, prompting organisers to call off the event and advise performers to leave. Khan departed the city soon after, while his accompanying tabla player was left stranded, facing difficulties in securing travel amid the disturbances.
Accounts from those involved indicate that the vandalism targeted property rather than individuals, but the incident created an atmosphere of fear that made rehearsals and public appearances untenable. Cultural organisers said police presence increased in parts of Dhaka following the incident, though movement remained uncertain for visiting artists and technicians reliant on local logistics.
The episode has reverberated across music circles in South Asia, where touring schedules frequently depend on goodwill between institutions and a perception of safe public spaces. Musicians noted that classical performances often take place in modest auditoriums or community halls without the security buffers common at large commercial concerts, leaving events vulnerable during periods of unrest.
Khan, whose repertoire blends the Maihar and Senia traditions, has performed widely across the region and is regarded as a bridge between audiences in eastern India and Bangladesh. Colleagues said the cancellation was particularly disappointing given the collaborative nature of the programme, which included workshops for students and a joint finale planned with local artistes.
Cultural administrators in Kolkata said they were coordinating with counterparts in Dhaka to assist the stranded tabla player and to explore options for rescheduling the programme once conditions stabilise. Musicians’ associations have urged authorities on both sides of the border to provide clearer advisories and contingency arrangements for visiting performers, including emergency travel assistance and secure rehearsal spaces.
