Violence erupted in Assam’s West Karbi Anglong district on Monday after protests linked to demands for evictions escalated into arson and stone-pelting, with demonstrators setting fire to the ancestral home of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council Chief Executive Member and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Tuliram Ronghang in Dongkamukam. Police said no casualties were reported, though the blaze caused damage to property and prompted a heavy security deployment across sensitive pockets of the district.
Authorities said the unrest followed mobilisation around eviction demands that have sharpened tensions between groups backing the removal of alleged encroachments and residents who fear displacement. Eyewitnesses described a crowd gathering near Ronghang’s residence before a section broke away, hurled stones and torched the structure. Fire services later brought the flames under control as police dispersed the mob.
Senior officials said prohibitory orders were enforced in parts of West Karbi Anglong to prevent further flare-ups, while additional forces were moved in from neighbouring areas. Police confirmed the registration of cases related to arson, rioting and damage to public and private property, adding that video footage and on-ground intelligence were being examined to identify those involved. A senior officer said investigations would determine whether the attack was premeditated or an opportunistic escalation amid a volatile protest.
Ronghang condemned the violence, calling it an assault on democratic dissent and urging calm. Party colleagues said attacks on private homes crossed a line and demanded firm action against those responsible. Leaders from other political formations also appealed for restraint, warning that disputes over land and evictions risk spiralling if grievances are not addressed through dialogue and lawful processes.
The episode underscores the fraught nature of eviction-related politics in Assam’s hill districts, where questions of land rights, traditional habitation and administrative authority intersect. West Karbi Anglong has witnessed intermittent agitation over land use and settlement patterns, with the autonomous council playing a central role in governance. Analysts note that while eviction drives are framed as administrative exercises, they often ignite social tensions unless accompanied by transparent processes, rehabilitation measures and sustained engagement with affected communities.
District officials said outreach efforts were under way to defuse tempers, with meetings planned between community representatives and the administration. Security patrols were intensified along key routes in Dongkamukam and nearby villages, and residents were advised to avoid large gatherings. Police maintained that the situation was under control by late evening, though vigilance would continue as inquiries progress and efforts focus on preventing a repeat of the violence.
