The NDA’s victory in the election of Rajya Sabha deputy chairman was of course the result of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s strategy. But it was also helped by the failure of Congress to put up a fight of substance. Rahul Gandhi did not contact with any other political parties including AAP, TRS and BJD, resulting the winning of NDA candidate Harivansh Narayan Singh with the margin of 20 votes. Rahul Gandhi is these days busy interacting with different groups of journalists in informal meetings. He answered their questions on an array of issues. Firstly he met the women journalists on 24 July in which he introduced himself to each one of them answered their questions. On 3 August he met the male journalists. He said that he would soon go to Kailash Mansarovar as it is very close to his heart. Rahul also met members of the International press and now he is planning to meet the Editors of print and electronic media.
RAJE TO STAY CM FACE
Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje has declared she would continue to be BJP’s chief ministerial face for the coming assembly election in Rajasthan, after having won the fight in the nomination of state party president. She has now started a state Gaurav Yatra. She has organised a similar yatra in 2003 and 2013 but at that time she was in the opposition. She plans to use the yatra to highlight the achievements of her government in the last five yeas. Meanwhile Congress president Rahul Gandhi organised a rally in Jaipur after the 13 kilometer road show in Jaipur. He appealed to the people, especially the youth to raise the unemployment issue and also spoke on corruption and price rise. He declared that his party will not give ticket to any corrupt politician, but reward grassroots level workers by fielding them as party candidates.
SP, BSP EYE LARGER FRONT
SP and BSP are now busy exploring the formation of a larger front in Uttar Pradesh before the Lok Sabha election in 2019 to fight against the BJP. But BJP president Amit Shah has assured his UP state executive members the party would definitely win the election in UP just as they did against the alliance of Congress-SP in the 2017 Assembly election. He tried to boost the confidence of the party by saying that the win will be due to the efforts of the party workers. Meanwhile, Home Minister Rajnath Singh advised the party workers to remain united and work for the defeat of opposition.
NO CONGRESS CM FACE FOR CHHATTISGARH
Congress will not announce any chief minister candidate for the Assembly election in Chhattisgarh, but face the election under the combined leadership of Bhupesh Baghel, a Kurmi leader and state party president Tamradhwaj Sahu, who was recently elevated to the CWC, and TS Singh Deo, the opposition leader in Vidhan Sabha. The party hopes to bank on the dalits votes, which constitute 42% of the electorate. Since Ajit Jogi left the party in 2015 and launched his new Chattisgarh Janta Congress, the dalit support base of Congress has been dented as he belonged to the tribal community. So, the Congress is now working on OBCs, who make 36% of votes in the state. With an eye on the Kurmi votes, the party appointed Bhupesh Baghel the state party chief. Kurmis account for 20% of population and made Sahu a Congress working committee member as Sahus are 16% of the population in the state (IPA)
