Asauddin Owaisi is delusional speaking with the Cosmos. The only Member of Parliament who likes to be called Barrister-at-Law is not loathe to step over laws he deems don’t help take forward his religious agenda, which again is more political.
Owaisi’s modus vivendi – way of life – is fraught with contradictions. In Parliament he behaves as if he is above religion, asking for a law to jail people who tell Muslims to go to Pakistan. But the minute he is out of Parliament, he reverts to extremist Muslim in the bat of an eyelid.
The other day he stooped very low, indeed, almost kissed soiled soil, forgot that Muslims are as much sons of Indian soil, and brazenly and shamelessly communalised the martyrdom of Indian Army soldiers killed by Pakistan-sponsored terrorists at the Sunjuwan army camp in Jammu by differentiating them by religion.
Playing identity politics to the hilt, like the duplicitous politician he is – a throwback to his ancestors’ Razakar days – Owaisi gloated that five of the seven Indian Army soldiers who were killed in the attack were Muslims, questioning why “this” was not being spoken about. “Itna Sanaata Kyun Hai?” he asked in a loud Sholay-style whisper, the question directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
On February 14, the Army responded with Lt. Gen Devraj Anbu, chief of Northern Army Command, slamming Owaisi in particular and politicians in general for attempting to communalize the Army without understanding how the Army functioned. Asking them to “hands off the Army”, Lt. Gen Anbu suggested that every citizen should have a stint in the Army to grasp the soldier’s religion; that the soldier only served the country and for the soldier all religions counted the same.
Owaisi’s statement in the Lok Sabha that those calling Indian Muslims “Pakistani” and asking them to “go to Pakistan” should face a three-year jail term was largely appreciated and applauded though even that was born out of his opposition to the Triple Talaq Bill, which asks for a three-year jail term for husbands giving wives instant talaq, proving once again that the AIMIM Member of Parliament cannot get out of his fundamentalist Muslim skin even when being rational.
Asauddin and his brother Akbaruddin Owaisi are serial offenders when it comes to polarising people along communal lines. The younger Owaisi is even more a fanatic Muslim than the elder Owaisi. The Owaisi family has a stranglehold on the Muslim electorate of the constituencies they represent in Lok Sabha and the Telengana Assembly. Their father Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi represented Hyderabad before Asauddin Owaisi took his place. Fiery speeches of the brothers — Asauddin and Akbaruddin — clearly aim at polarisation and border on religious warmongering.
It is to be seen how Asauddin reacts to the Army’s response to his communal provocation. Lt. Gen Anbu made it clear that the Army has no mosques, temples or churches. They Army has only ‘Sarva Dharma Sthals’ and that the Army’s ‘Dharma’ is to serve all, serve India. “We do not communalise,” he told the nation. “We do not serve any one religion or the other.”
The top soldier of the Northern Command said only the “ignorant” can talk or think like Asauddin Owaisi. It appears like Owaisi this time picked on the wrong formation to hedge his communal agenda on. Even after this if he fails to get the drift, he must indeed be “ignorant” and nothing of what he learned in London while studying Law must have gone to his head, or probably it has gone to his head!
