Contradicting Army chief Gen V. K. Singh,India’s scientific advisor V. K. Saraswat, who is heading the DRDO has given full marks to the Tatra trucks. Mr. Saraswat claimed the trucks were outstanding and there was nothing substandard about the vehicles which are used as a base for launching missiles like Prithvi and Agni.
India’s Tatra truck are outstanding trucks and there have been no complaints at all from the Indian Army. The Indian Army has been using them for the past 20 years and they have a very good cross country capability and can move at good speeds.
The Army chief, Gen V. K. Singh has contended that these all-weather trucks were ‘substandard’.
The launchers of India’s most advance missiles like the Prithvi and Agni are based on Tatre trucks, However, there are minor issues related to it’s serviceability.
India’s scientific advisor has said, “we will have more of them in the future if there was any further requirement of these trucks. However, if the government gives us orders against using them, the DRDO will stop doing so”.
Tatra had a truck-building joint venture in India called Tatra Vectra Motors Ltd, formerly called Tatra Trucks India Ltd. The manufacturing plant is located in Hosur, Tamilnadu, around 35 km from Bangalore. The fully integrated manufacturing facility includes an engine assembly and testing plant, a cabin welding shop, a frame fabrication shop and a test track.
