Who is more Hindu? BJP or Congress? Lately this has been the bothering question for voters as the next general elections in India are approaching. However, the communist party, CPI(M), has an answer and an editorial of its mouthpiece People’s Democracy writes the Rahul Gandhi-led Congress party is trying to prove to be more “Hindu” than the BJP.
CPI(M) former general secretary Prakash Karat is the editor of People’s Democracy and he points out Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s flurry of visits to temples in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh during the recent poll campaign.
Karat writes in the editorial column that temple visits of Rahul Gandhi in the three states seems to be an attempt to prove the Congress was genuinely more Hindu. Even the party’s manifesto in Madhya Pradesh talked about commercial sale of ‘gau mutra’, ‘Ram Van Gaman Path Yatra’ and having ‘gaushalas’ in every panchayat.
In Rajasthan the party’s manifesto talked about setting up education board to propagate Vedic values.
The editorial adds if Congress believes can defeat BJP with such soft Hindutva tactics, it is a mistake for the party.
However, it is to note that two dominant issues during the 2019 general elections would be unemployment and farmer’s distress. The Ram Mandir campaign of Sangh Parivar is just a measure to divert attention of voters.
Currently the CPI(M) is in an alliance with Congress and DMK in Tamil Nadu. The party is having talks with the Nationalist Congress Party in Maharashtra.
