Walter Elias Disney was born on December 5, 1901 in Chicago Illinois. Walt soon developed a very early interest in drawing and would spend time doodling and sketching instead of doing school work. His talents were first used in a silent cartoon called Plane Crazy. However, before the cartoon was actually released, sound was introduced upon the motion picture industry. Thus, Mickey Mouse made his screen debut in 1928 in Steamboat Willie, the world’s first synchronized sound cartoon.
Mickey Mouse
Since his 1928 debut in “Steamboat Willie”, Mickey Mouse has won the hearts of millions with his boyish charm. Truly an international superstar, Mickey has appeared in more than 130 cartoons, performed on television, played a leading role in the animated classic, “Fantasia”, and starred in the 1983 hit animated feature, “Mickey’s Christmas Carol”. As official host of the Disney theme parks, he extends a personal welcome to millions of guests yearly.
Described by Sergei Eisenstein as “America’s most original contribution to culture” and by the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art as “the greatest historical figure in the development of American Art”, Mickey has never let his success go to his ears! Still the uncomplicated, clean-living, fun-loving nice guy, he continues to be a symbol of cheerful innocence and hopeful optimism today.
Mickey, now in his 80′s has changed and developed over the years. He has matured from the raucous rebel to a “good natured little guy trying to make good”. However, Disney has always been careful to ensure the changes over the years have been natural, making them hardly noticeable.
Minnie Mouse
Minnie is the much-loved girlfriend of Mickey Mouse. She has grown up alongside Mickey and has developed hand-in-hand with him. Debuting with Mickey in the 1928 classic “Steamboat Willie”, Minnie showed a fair degree of independence, but spent many years playing a more passive role. Today, although Mickey will always be her hero, Minnie has shown that she can be a heroine too! Often acting as Mickey’s helpmate or inspiration, Minnie is also a flirtatious charmer. Practical, efficient, coy, cool and confident, she’s her own mouse – even when she’s playing her role as Mickey’s young lady.
The world’s most famous mouse is the best known of all the animated characters created by Walt Disney. There surely cannot be many people who have not heard of Mickey! Walt Disney’s dream of a clean, and organized amusement park, where all his creations can be experienced, came true, as Disneyland Park opened in 1955.
