Authorities across multiple states have intensified security protocols in anticipation of the Ram Navami festival. In Maharashtra, particularly in Mumbai’s Malad-Malwani area, the Bombay High Court has directed police to ensure strict maintenance of law and order during processions. This directive follows concerns about rallies passing through sensitive areas with significant Muslim populations. The court emphasized the necessity for police to prevent any breaches of peace during these events.
In Uttar Pradesh, police are enhancing surveillance by deploying tethered drones at key religious and tourist sites, including the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, Gorakhnath Temple in Gorakhpur, and the Taj Mahal in Agra. These drones are designed for extended use in fixed positions, offering continuous aerial monitoring to aid in crowd control and public safety. The state plans to acquire nine such drones, each estimated to cost approximately ₹51.33 lakh.
The Uttar Pradesh Police are implementing anti-drone technology to counter unauthorized drone activities, especially during significant events like the consecration ceremony at the Ram temple in Ayodhya. This measure aims to prevent potential security threats posed by unregulated drone usage.
In Mumbai, police have conducted route marches and flag marches in areas such as Andheri, Malad, Kandivali, and Borivali to demonstrate readiness and deter potential disturbances. These areas are known for their narrow lanes through which traditional processions pass, necessitating heightened vigilance. The police are also utilizing drone surveillance to monitor these processions effectively.
The heightened security measures come in response to past incidents of communal tension during Ram Navami celebrations. For instance, in April 2023, clashes in Malad West led to the arrest of 20 individuals and the booking of 400 others for rioting and assault. Such incidents have prompted authorities to adopt more stringent measures to ensure peaceful observances of the festival.
Community leaders and activists have played a pivotal role in promoting harmony during these celebrations. In Mumbai, activists have engaged with local committees and law enforcement to address grievances and prevent hate speech, contributing to peaceful processions in areas previously affected by communal conflicts.
