A joint operation by the Army’s Romeo Force and the Special Operations Group of the Jammu and Kashmir Police entered its tenth day on Thursday, as security forces continue to search the dense Lasana forest area in Poonch district for terrorists believed to be hiding there.
The operation commenced on April 15, following an exchange of fire the previous night near Lasana village, situated close to the National Highway connecting Poonch to Jammu. During the encounter, one Romeo Force personnel sustained injuries. Since then, the area has been cordoned off, with additional troops deployed to prevent the terrorists from escaping.
Security forces have intensified their efforts, deploying drones, sniffer dogs, and helicopters to assist in the search. The operation is part of a broader strategy to curb terrorist activities in the region, which has seen a resurgence in infiltration attempts and attacks on security personnel.
In 2024, Jammu Police reported significant progress in combating terrorism, neutralizing 14 foreign terrorists and dismantling 13 terror modules across the region. Action was taken against 827 individuals involved in anti-national activities, a substantial increase from the previous year.
The ongoing operation in Poonch is one of several simultaneous search efforts launched across the Jammu division. Security forces have initiated operations at 23 locations in mountainous areas, including Kishtwar, Doda, Rajouri, Udhampur, Kathua, and Reasi districts. Intelligence reports suggest that militants are regrouping in these forests, receiving fresh weaponry and ammunition.
Authorities have also cracked down on Over Ground Workers , detaining over 50 individuals who were allegedly aiding militants by providing food, logistical support, and communication links with their handlers in Pakistan. Properties of several terrorists operating from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir have been attached, targeting their financial channels.
The Northern Army Commander, Lt General Upendra Dwivedi, stated that proactive measures have been initiated against terrorists in the Rajouri-Poonch belt, with a special focus on enhancing collaboration among different security agencies to fortify the overall security framework. He noted that while the region has experienced economic growth and increased investment, neighboring countries continue to support terrorism to disrupt peace and prosperity.
