Roman Babushkin, Russia’s charge d’affaires, expressed hopes for a swift resolution to the issue of recruitment of Indian nationals as support staff within the country’s military ranks, emphasizing that the involvement of Indians was purely commercial and not intended to integrate them into the Russian armed forces.
Speaking at a media briefing, Babushkin clarified Russia’s stance, stating, “We have never wanted Indians to be part of the Russian Army. You would never see any announcement by Russian authorities on this.” He stressed that the recruitment was primarily under a commercial framework, with individuals seeking employment opportunities for financial gain. He downplayed the significance of their numbers in the broader context of ongoing conflicts, suggesting their count—whether 50, 60, or 100—was negligible.
The issue came into the spotlight following discussions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin, where Modi reportedly raised concerns “very strongly.” Babushkin assured that Russia is committed to facilitating the early release and return of all Indian nationals enlisted in its military service.
Highlighting a critical concern, Babushkin pointed out that most of the recruited Indians were working illegally, having entered Russia on tourist visas instead of appropriate work permits. He acknowledged that addressing their status and ensuring their safe return to India was imperative.
Regarding compensation and other obligations, Babushkin affirmed, “It should happen anyway as per the contractual obligations,” in response to queries about compensating families of those who may have been affected.
Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra, who recently visited Moscow, echoed Babushkin’s assurances, noting that the Russian side had committed to expediting the process of discharging and repatriating all Indian nationals involved.
The diplomatic efforts underscored a shared goal between India and Russia to swiftly resolve the issue, underscoring the delicate nature of bilateral relations amidst evolving geopolitical dynamics.
