The Congress on Friday announced that the party’s bank accounts, including those of the Youth Congress, were frozen by the Income Tax department However, just an hour after Congress made the announcement, the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) in Delhi unfroze the accounts.
The allegation comes just weeks ahead of the announcement of the Lok Sabha Election 2024 schedule.
The Congress party treasurer Ajay Maken earlier today held a press conference where he called the action a “disturbing blow to the democratic process”.
According to reports, the freeze reportedly stems from a tax demand of Rs 210 crore raised by the Income Tax department, a move that the Congress claims is politically motivated and strategically timed to disrupt the party’s election preparations.
The government, on the other hand, said that the government had nothing to do with Congress’s finance accounts being frozen and it was a ‘regulatory action.’
