The opposition parties are meeting to discuss a proposal for a march by all opposition lawmakers of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha in solidarity with suspended MPs. A protest march from Gandhi statue to Vijay Chowk has been proposed. Twelve MPs — six from the Congress, two each from the Trinamool Congress and the Shiv Sena, and one each from the CPI and the CPI(M) — were suspended from the Rajya Sabha for the entire Winter Session of Parliament for their “unruly” conduct in the previous session in August.
Marshals were called after opposition members stormed the Well of the House during the passage of the General Insurance Business (Nationalisation) Amendment Bill, 2021, on the last day of the monsoon session on August 11. On Monday, members of Parliament from the Congress party walked out of the Rajya Sabha as the standoff over the issue continued. Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge said the government has not conceded to their demand to revisit the suspension.
