NEW DELHI: The National Manufacturing Mission, expected to be unveiled within a month, will include a dedicated body with the requisite “teeth” to address emerging challenges in a time-bound manner and elevate India’s manufacturing sector, NITI Aayog CEO BVR Subrahmanyam said on Friday.
In the Union Budget FY26, the government announced the launch of the National Manufacturing Mission to support small, medium, and large industries under the Make-in-India initiative. The goal is to raise the manufacturing sector’s contribution to GDP from the current 15–17% to 25%.
“What we need is a body with teeth, a body which can get things done. So we are looking at how it is to be structured, how it gets that kind of muscle that it actually gets things done spread across multiple departments,” Subrahmanyam said at an event organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
He noted that geopolitical uncertainties are creating huge opportunities for India. “We need to focus on winning sectors (like China did for its manufacturing),” he said.
The proposed overarching body under the National Manufacturing Mission will have the authority to issue directions, exercise control, and ensure implementation, he added.
“We are in the final stages of that, probably in a month’s time, it will probably get announced,” Subrahmanyam said.
“We need manufacturing transformation which will take people out of agriculture… manufacturing transformation is essential for India to become a developed nation,” he said.
He pointed out that currently 90% of manufacturing activities are happening in 5-6 states.
“China has placed itself at the heart of the global supply chains…Should not India also be a heart of global supply chains,” he said.
