BSP leader Mayawati is in touch with Ajit Jogi and is probably fighting the Chattisgarh assembly election with Jogi’s party. Jogi had left Congress two years ago and formed a regional outfit called Chhattisgarh Janata Congress. Recently he met Mayawati in Delhi and discussed details about seat sharing. Political observers believe that Mayawati going with Ajit Jogi in Chhattisgarh is definitely going to hurt the Congress party and will undermine the efforts of form a united opposition to take on BJP in the 2019 elections.
MAMATA IN DILEMMA OVER CONGRESS ALLIANCE
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is in a dilemma over whether she should forge an alliance with Congress in the coming Lok Sabha elections to defeat the BJP. Both Mamata and Congress president Rahul Gandhi are now discussing this issue with their respective party leaders. West Bengal Congress leaders have categorically told Rahul that they are against the alliance with Mamata Banerjee. However, party MP Abu Hassan Chaudhary met with TMC general secretary Partha Chatterjee along with another Congress MLA to discuss a possible alliance. According to political sources, if Congress refuses to form an alliance, at least 4 Congress MLAs are sitting on the edge to join the TMC. In the last two years 11 Congress MLAs, including Manas Bhunia, have joined TMC. Many of the Congress MLAs and leaders feel that if the party wants to stop the BJP, it should form an alliance with TMC. Mamata Banerjee had recently said that she does not want to be an aspirant for prime ministerial post as she has very good relations with Sonia Gandhi but Rahul is very young and she does not have much communication with him.
OOMMEN CHANDY’S PADYATRA IN ANDHRA
Former Kerala CM Oommen Chandy, who has been made in charge of the affairs of Congress in Andhra Pradesh, is set to launch a padyatra to revive the party from the grassroots to block and assembly levels. He has had a long session with Rahul Gandhi in Delhi to discuss his plan of faction for the state. Apart from a planned ‘ghar wapasi’ for Kiran Kumar Reddy and Harsh Kumar, he is carrying a list of 12 other erstwhile Congressmen who he would like see back in the party. Chandy, however, is hedging his bets on any state-level alliances. CM Chandrababu Naidu was seen warming up to Rahul Gandhi during HDK’s swearing-in in Bangalore, but a Congress-TDP alliance is a no-go area for the traditional rivals. But a multi-cornered contest is not exactly a bright strategy for any of the parties.
FACTIONALISM IN JHARKHAND CONGRESS COMES TO DELHI
Last week former central minister Subodh Kant Sahay, former MPs Furqan Ansari and KN Tripathi and MLA Manoj Yadav met the Congress general secretary Ashok Gehlot and Treasure Moti Lal Vohra to brief them about the situation in the Jharkhand Congress Committee and also complain about the functioning of state party president Dr Ajoy Kumar and general secretary in charge RPN Singh. They wanted to meet party president Rahul Gandhi on this issue but were not successful. The group considers Dr Ajoy Kumar as an outsider. (IPA)
