The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 concluded today in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, witnessing an unprecedented influx of devotees on the auspicious occasion of Maha Shivratri. The final ‘Shahi Snan’ commenced before dawn at the Triveni Sangam, the sacred confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers. Authorities estimate that over 65 crore pilgrims participated in the festival over its 45-day duration, setting a new record for the world’s largest religious gathering.
The festival, which began on January 13 , featured three ‘Amrit Snans’ and grand processions of Naga Sadhus, drawing devotees from across the nation and abroad. The Uttar Pradesh government intensified preparations for the final major bath, ensuring the safety and convenience of the massive crowds. Maha Kumbh Deputy Inspector General of Police Vaibhav Krishna stated that extensive security measures were implemented, with over 350 personnel deployed to manage the influx of pilgrims. Authorities remained on high alert, particularly at sensitive locations, to prevent any untoward incidents.
The festival was not without tragedy. On January 28, a stampede occurred during one of the major bathing days, resulting in at least 30 deaths and numerous injuries. The incident underscored the challenges of managing such a vast congregation. In response, officials enhanced crowd control measures and increased security protocols to ensure the safety of attendees in subsequent events.
