City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) has executed the demolition of an unauthorized dargah situated on land designated for the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) project. This action followed allegations raised by several Hindu organizations claiming that the illegal structure posed a potential threat to national security and the safety of the airport. The dargah, constructed on CIDCO-owned land, had been flagged for its unauthorized status, drawing significant public attention and demands for its removal.
The demolition took place after Hindu Janajagruti Samiti and other local organizations expressed concerns, arguing that the proximity of illegal structures to the upcoming airport site could lead to disruptions and security vulnerabilities. They urged CIDCO officials to address these issues promptly, citing national security as a critical concern. Representatives of the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti submitted a memorandum to CIDCO’s Chief Vigilance Officer and Navi Mumbai’s Deputy Commissioner of Police, seeking immediate action. The corporation subsequently confirmed that the demolition was carried out in accordance with legal protocols.
CIDCO clarified that the unauthorized construction violated zoning and land use regulations set for the airport’s buffer zone, a critical area designed to ensure safety and operational integrity. Authorities emphasized their commitment to maintaining strict compliance with the law and safeguarding public infrastructure from encroachments.
This move has sparked broader discussions about land encroachments in rapidly urbanizing regions like Navi Mumbai. CIDCO’s stance underscores the challenges of balancing urban development with infrastructure protection, particularly in high-security areas like airports. The corporation has also indicated that further vigilance will be employed to prevent such occurrences in the future, ensuring that development in the NMIA vicinity aligns with statutory requirements.
