A Bharatiya Janata Party leader was shot dead in Haryana’s Sonipat district on Friday night, escalating a protracted land dispute into fatal violence. The incident occurred around 9:30 pm in Jawahar village, where Surendra Jawahar, president of the BJP’s Mundlana Mandal, was allegedly killed by his neighbour, Monu, following a heated confrontation over property ownership.
According to law enforcement officials, the conflict centered on a tract of land Jawahar had purchased from Monu’s relatives. Tensions had been simmering, with Monu reportedly issuing warnings to Jawahar against entering the disputed property. On the night of the incident, Jawahar visited the land to commence clearing activities, prompting Monu to confront him. The altercation escalated rapidly, culminating in Monu allegedly firing multiple shots at Jawahar.
Surveillance footage from the vicinity reveals Jawahar seeking refuge in a nearby shop, shouting, “Mujhe maar diya” , as Monu pursued him. Despite attempts by bystanders to intervene, Monu allegedly fired at least two bullets at close range, resulting in Jawahar’s immediate death.
Gohana Assistant Commissioner of Police Rishi Kant confirmed the arrest of Monu and indicated that an investigation is underway to ascertain the precise sequence of events leading to the shooting. Preliminary findings suggest that the land dispute had been a longstanding issue between the two parties, with legal proceedings reportedly ongoing since 2021. The property in question comprises approximately three bighas of land, which Jawahar had purchased from Monu’s uncle and aunt. Disagreements over the transfer of ownership had exacerbated tensions, ultimately leading to the fatal encounter.
Eyewitnesses recounted the harrowing scene, describing how Jawahar sought shelter in the shop, only to be followed and shot by Monu. The brazenness of the act, occurring in a public space and captured on CCTV, has sent shockwaves through the local community. Residents expressed their disbelief and sorrow over the incident, highlighting the need for timely resolution of property disputes to prevent such tragedies.
The BJP’s local unit has expressed profound grief over Jawahar’s death, lauding his contributions to the party and the community. Party officials have called for a thorough investigation and swift justice, emphasizing the importance of addressing underlying issues that lead to such violent outcomes.
Property disputes are not uncommon in the region, often leading to prolonged legal battles and, in some cases, violence. Legal experts note that the complexities of land ownership laws, coupled with bureaucratic delays, can exacerbate tensions among disputing parties. They advocate for more efficient legal mechanisms and alternative dispute resolution methods to address such conflicts before they escalate.
The local administration has assured the public of a comprehensive investigation into the incident. Authorities have also appealed for calm, urging residents to refrain from speculation and allow the legal process to unfold. Security has been heightened in the area to prevent any potential unrest stemming from the incident.
