Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi’s reported exhortation to college students to chant “Jai Shri Ram” has ignited a political firestorm, drawing sharp criticism from educational bodies and political leaders who accuse him of breaching constitutional norms and secular principles.
The Secular Progressive Confederation of State Scholars-Tamil Nadu , a collective of educationists, condemned the Governor’s remarks, asserting that such actions violate the oath of office and the secular fabric of the nation. In a formal communication to President Droupadi Murmu, SPCSS-TN urged the immediate removal of Governor Ravi, citing his actions as detrimental to the state’s communal harmony and constitutional integrity.
Chief Minister M K Stalin has also addressed a letter to President Murmu, expressing grave concerns over the Governor’s conduct. Stalin accused Ravi of instigating communal hatred and acting in a manner that threatens the peace and unity of Tamil Nadu. He highlighted that the Governor’s statements and actions reflect a deep-rooted animosity towards Tamil culture and the state’s democratic institutions.
The controversy is the latest in a series of confrontations between the Governor and the state government. Previously, Governor Ravi faced criticism for delaying assent to several bills passed by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, including legislation aimed at reforming university governance. His public remarks praising Sanatana Dharma and questioning the necessity of secularism in India have further strained relations with the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and its allies.
Opposition parties have joined the chorus of condemnation. The Congress party described the Governor’s statements as outrageous and unacceptable, demanding his immediate dismissal. Senior Congress leader Manickam Tagore emphasized that such remarks undermine India’s constitutional commitment to secularism and the inclusive vision of its founding leaders.
