A political controversy has erupted in the capital as the Bharatiya Janata Party has accused former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal of misappropriating the official X handle of the Chief Minister’s Office . The handle, previously known as ‘CMO Delhi’, was reportedly renamed to ‘Arvind Kejriwal At Work’ , a move the BJP alleges was executed without proper authorization.
Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva has demanded immediate intervention from Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena. He has called for a comprehensive report from the government’s Information Technology department regarding the circumstances under which the official handle was repurposed to promote Kejriwal’s personal initiatives. Sachdeva emphasized that the handle, developed and expanded using public funds, had garnered approximately one million followers, underscoring its significance as a public asset.
“Arvind Kejriwal changed the account of Delhi CMO and made it his own account; this is a direct loot of government money. This is digital loot,” Sachdeva stated, expressing his disapproval of the alleged unauthorized alteration. He further accused Kejriwal of compromising the personal information of the handle’s followers, suggesting that such actions warrant legal scrutiny.
The controversy deepened when the renamed X handle was subsequently deleted, raising questions about the intent and transparency behind these actions. Newly elected BJP MLA Vijender Gupta criticized Kejriwal for allegedly attempting to erase records of his tenure. He claimed that old videos of assembly sessions and government programs had been removed from the official YouTube channel of the Delhi government, describing it as a futile attempt to hide failures.
In response to these allegations, the Aam Aadmi Party dismissed the BJP’s claims as baseless. A spokesperson for the party stated that the BJP should focus on governing Delhi rather than making unfounded accusations. The AAP has yet to provide a detailed explanation regarding the renaming and subsequent deletion of the X handle.
This incident comes in the wake of the BJP’s recent electoral victory in Delhi, marking their return to power in the capital after 26 years. The party secured a decisive win over the AAP in the assembly elections held on February 5, 2025. As the BJP prepares to form the new government, this dispute over digital assets highlights the challenges and complexities of transitioning administrative control, especially concerning digital and informational resources.
