Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav has voiced strong criticism against the Uttar Pradesh government’s handling of the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, highlighting severe traffic congestion and alleging mismanagement that has left residents feeling “under house arrest.”
Yadav questioned the allocation of ₹10,000 crores for the event, pointing out that despite this substantial expenditure, devotees are grappling with significant traffic disruptions. He emphasised that the closure of roads leading to the Sangam area has forced pilgrims, including the elderly, children, and women, to walk extensive distances, causing considerable inconvenience and fatigue.
The Maha Kumbh Mela, renowned as one of the world’s largest religious gatherings, has attracted an overwhelming number of participants this year. Reports indicate that on auspicious bathing days, the influx of devotees far exceeded expectations, leading to overcrowded routes and logistical challenges.
Tragically, the event has been marred by a deadly stampede, resulting in at least 30 fatalities. Eyewitnesses recounted chaotic scenes where pilgrims pleaded with authorities to open more routes to alleviate the crushing crowds. The police’s alleged inaction in response to these pleas has drawn sharp criticism.
In response to the mounting concerns, Mela authorities have implemented measures such as designating ‘No Vehicle Zones’ on major bathing days to manage the flow of pilgrims more effectively. However, these steps have not fully mitigated the challenges faced by attendees.
