BJP president Nitin Nabin cut short his Jammu and Kashmir visit on Tuesday and returned to New Delhi after a key party meeting was called in the capital at short notice, forcing him to skip part of his scheduled outreach programme, party functionaries said.
Nabin had arrived in Jammu for a two-day organisational tour, his first visit to the Union Territory after taking charge as party chief. The programme was planned around meetings with local office-bearers, cadre mobilisation and a Yuva Samvad event aimed at strengthening the party’s youth connect. He was also expected to visit the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine before leaving.
Party leaders did not disclose the agenda of the Delhi meeting, describing it only as an important organisational engagement. The abrupt change in schedule, however, came at a time when the BJP has intensified internal consultations across states and Union Territories ahead of coming electoral contests and organisational reshuffles.
Jammu and Kashmir remains a politically sensitive region for the party, which has sought to consolidate its base in Jammu while expanding outreach in the Valley after the restoration of an elected government and the reworking of political alignments in the Union Territory. The BJP’s local unit has been pressing for sharper coordination between central leaders and district-level workers, particularly on youth mobilisation, booth management and public messaging.
Nabin’s elevation to the party’s national leadership marked a generational shift within the organisation. A five-time legislator from Bihar and a former minister in the Nitish Kumar-led government, he has also handled party responsibilities in states including Chhattisgarh. His Jammu visit was intended to signal a hands-on approach to state units and reinforce the party’s emphasis on direct engagement with workers.
The cancelled Vaishno Devi visit drew attention because political leaders often use shrine visits in Jammu as part of wider public outreach. Party functionaries said the pilgrimage may be rescheduled, but no fresh date has been announced.
Nabin’s next round of engagements is expected to focus on organisational reviews, coordination with state units and preparations for campaigns where the BJP is seeking to sharpen its ground network.
