Bengaluru Central Member of Parliament, PC Mohan, has strongly rejected claims made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi regarding alleged electoral fraud during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Gandhi’s assertion that the election in the constituency was “stolen” has been met with fierce opposition from Mohan, who termed the accusation as an affront to the people of Bengaluru, particularly the Hindu voters who supported the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Mohan, who secured a victory in the elections, questioned the integrity of Gandhi’s remarks and dismissed the allegations as baseless. Speaking to the media, he emphasised that such statements only serve to undermine the democratic process and insult the electorate. “The people of Bengaluru have made their choice with full confidence. To claim that their votes were stolen is a direct insult to thousands of Hindus who stood by the BJP,” Mohan stated.
The BJP MP’s response comes after Gandhi, during a public rally, accused the ruling party of manipulating the election results to secure victory in key constituencies, including Bengaluru Central. He claimed that the process was not transparent and that there had been irregularities in the voting system.
Mohan’s response focused on defending the legitimacy of the election process, highlighting the transparency maintained by the Election Commission. He reiterated that the election was free and fair, and that allegations like those put forward by Gandhi only serve to create unnecessary divisions. “We won the election through hard work, dedication, and the trust of the people. Such unfounded allegations reflect nothing but desperation,” he remarked.
The Bengaluru Central constituency, a major political battleground, has witnessed growing tensions between the Congress and the BJP, especially in the run-up to the 2024 polls. Both parties have heavily contested the region, with their respective candidates seeking to secure a foothold in one of Karnataka’s most politically significant areas. The region has long been a stronghold for the BJP, but the Congress has been actively attempting to regain ground, making the stakes particularly high for both sides.
Political analysts suggest that Gandhi’s remarks could be an attempt to galvanise support among his party’s base, who have been increasingly critical of the BJP’s dominance in the state. The Congress has previously raised concerns over the alleged manipulation of election results in other states, and Gandhi’s claims about Bengaluru Central appear to be part of this broader narrative.
While these tensions escalate, Mohan’s stance remains firm. He called for the Congress to focus on improving its own electoral strategy rather than casting aspersions on the results of the democratic process. “If Rahul Gandhi and his party believe in the democratic values that this nation stands for, they should accept the people’s verdict and work towards bettering their own party’s future,” he added.
The BJP has also come out in defence of Mohan’s victory, accusing the Congress of resorting to divisive tactics in an attempt to sow doubt in the electoral process. BJP leaders in Karnataka have demanded that Gandhi retract his allegations, calling them reckless and unfounded.
Meanwhile, Gandhi’s remarks have sparked a political debate across the country, with many questioning the validity of such statements and the potential consequences on the integrity of future elections. Critics argue that undermining the election results without substantial evidence not only damages the reputation of the party making the claims but also threatens public trust in the electoral system itself.
