Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked the 78th Independence Day by emphasising his government’s commitment to economic reforms and attracting global investment.
Addressing the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort, Modi highlighted that the reforms are driven by conviction rather than compulsion, aiming to boost economic growth and make India a developed nation by 2047.
Modi detailed recent reforms, including an overhaul of the banking sector which has facilitated easier credit for businesses and entrepreneurs. He noted that these changes have transformed India from a mobile phone importer to an exporter. The Prime Minister also underscored advancements in skill development and manufacturing.
“This commitment to reforms is not just for short-term praise or editorial acclaim,” Modi said, distinguishing his administration’s approach from past crisis-driven reforms. “Our reforms are a blueprint for growth, driven by national interest, not political calculations.”
The Prime Minister also celebrated achievements such as the electrification of 18,000 villages, provision of electricity connections to over 25 million people, and delivery of tap water to 120 million families. He praised the expansion of the space sector and advancements in technology.
Reviewing his government’s accomplishments, Modi stated that per capita income has doubled, India’s share in global growth has risen, the number of airports has increased, foreign exchange reserves have doubled, and global institutions have shown greater confidence in the country.
He also pointed out that India has shifted from being a mobile phone importer to having a robust manufacturing sector that exports globally. As 5G technology is rolled out nationwide, efforts are already underway on the next-generation 6G technology, he said in his I-Day speech.
The prime minister called upon the collective resolve of India’s 1.4 billion citizens to achieve the vision of a prosperous and developed India by 2047. Modi urged citizens to unite in their efforts, drawing inspiration from the sacrifices of previous generations.
“If our ancestors, whose blood runs in our veins, if 40 crore people can break the shackles of slavery and achieve the dream of freedom, then 140 crore citizens can resolve and decide to walk together shoulder-to-shoulder, then no matter the challenges, we can build a prosperous India. We can achieve the target of developed India by 2047,” he said.
