Authorities in Purnea district of Bihar confirmed that the bodies of three family members of a prominent politician were discovered in their residence. Naveen Kushwaha, his wife Mala Devi and their daughter Tanu Priya were found night before last in their home located in the European Colony under the jurisdiction of Kehat Police Station. Senior officials stated that the trio are related to JD leader Neeranjan Kushwaha, with Naveen identified as his elder brother.
Purnea Sadar Sub-Divisional Police Officer Jyoti Shankar reported that law-enforcement teams were alerted following the discovery and dispatched forensic experts to the scene. The bodies were transported to the district hospital for post-mortem examinations to establish cause of death. Local sources told investigators that Naveen had contested both Lok Sabha and state assembly elections and held significant local influence.
MP Rajesh Ranjan, also known as Pappu Yadav, visited the family home and expressed his concerns. He urged district officials to ensure a full inquiry, pointing out that prima facie the deaths did not appear to be the result of natural causes. He called on the administration to examine whether foul play was involved and to provide answers to the public.
Police are exploring multiple lines of investigation. One line under consideration stems from remarks by residents who speculated that Tanu Priya may have suffered a fall on the house staircase, triggering a sequence: her father attempting to assist, then reportedly falling, subsequently leading to the mother’s collapse from what is described as a possible cardiac event. Officers emphasise that this account remains unverified and are awaiting forensic and medical reports to determine the accuracy of these claims.
Sources confirm the bodies were located on Tuesday night and police responded promptly the next day. The district crime unit has collected evidence from the household, including fingerprints and material that may require forensic analysis while the post-mortem findings are pending. Given the political affiliation of the family, officials say the probe will also examine potential angles such as threats, domestic dispute and financial motives.
The incident has ignited a wave of concern in the region, particularly given its proximity to upcoming electoral proceedings. Many local residents gathered outside the residence following the discovery, prompting police to deploy additional personnel to manage crowd control and safeguard the crime scene. District administration officials say they are in contact with state law-enforcement agencies for technical support if required.
