The government of Telangana state government has proposed to rename the road housing the United States Consulate General in Hyderabad as “Donald Trump Avenue,” in honour of the 45th and 47th President of the United States, Donald J. Trump. Officials say a formal communication will be sent to the Ministry of External Affairs and the U. S. Embassy in India before the renaming takes effect.
The proposal forms part of a broader naming exercise by Telangana authorities, unveiling plans to christen multiple city thoroughfares after global figures and corporate giants. A new greenfield radial road connecting the Nehru Outer Ring Road at Raviryala to the proposed Regional Ring Road is set to be named after industrialist Ratan Tata, the interchange at Raviryala having already been dubbed “Tata Interchange.” Another stretch beside the forthcoming campus of tech giant Google is slated to be called “Google Street,” while proposed designations such as “Microsoft Road” and “Wipro Junction” reflect the state government’s efforts to recognise the influence of global corporations in Hyderabad’s evolving landscape.
The naming drive is being framed as a strategic move ahead of the forthcoming Telangana Rising Global Summit, scheduled to bring international investors to the state. Telangana’s leadership intends to project the city not just as a domestic hub but as a global beacon for innovation, diplomacy and investment. Officials argue that assigning globally recognised names to prominent city roads can send a symbolic signal about the region’s ambitions.
Reactions to the proposal have been mixed. Supporters point out that naming a road after a sitting US President could underscore Hyderabad’s diplomatic relevance and attract international attention. Critics, however, warn that such gestures risk appearing as political gimmicks rather than initiatives grounded in historical or cultural sensibilities. Members of the Bharatiya Janata Party have voiced discomfort with the plan, suggesting it lacks meaningful context and accusing the state government of changing names based on trendiness rather than legacy.
