Jailer 2’s phenomenal success at the box office is an achievement that is remarkable even by the standards of an industry accustomed to celebrating its superstars on an epic scale. It places Rajinikanth once again at the centre of Tamil cinema’s commercial universe, supported by director Nelson Dilipkumar, composer Anirudh Ravichander and a supporting cast assembled to appeal to audiences across several Indian languages.

But what explains the extraordinary reception? Is it the continuation of a compelling story, the irresistible presence of Rajinikanth, Anirudh’s music, or the carefully orchestrated combination of all three? The answer appears to lie in the way Jailer 2 turns a familiar action-hero formula into a celebration of a star whose appeal has endured changing generations, filmmaking styles and personal health challenges.

A record that surpasses the original. The first Jailer, released in 2023, established the character of Muthuvel Pandian: a retired jailer who appears to have settled into domestic life but possesses a formidable past that can be summoned when his family is threatened. Its mixture of dark humour, violence, family drama and surprise appearances by other stars made it a major commercial success. Its reported worldwide collection of approximately ₹605 crore placed it among the biggest Tamil films of its time.

The sequel has now gone beyond that benchmark. By October 26, trade estimates placed Jailer 2 at approximately ₹710–₹712 crore worldwide; the following day’s reporting put it above ₹733 crore. These are reported gross figures, not audited producer accounts, and box-office trackers may differ in their calculations.

The previous record-holder, 2.0, directed by S. Shankar and released in 2018, paired Rajinikanth with Akshay Kumar in a science-fiction spectacle. Other major Tamil commercial successes include Vijay’s Leo, the original Jailer and Rajinikanth’s Coolie. The emerging rankings underscore the actor’s continuing presence among the industry’s biggest theatrical attractions.

Calling the film the biggest blockbuster in “Tollywood” would be geographically imprecise: Tollywood generally refers to Telugu cinema. Jailer 2 is a Tamil or Kollywood production, although its Telugu-dubbed release and other language versions have broadened its audience.

What is the story behind the sequel? Nelson Dilipkumar has chosen to expand the original film’s criminal underworld rather than simply repeat its formula. Tiger Muthuvel Pandian is trying to rebuild a quieter existence while his family continues to live with the consequences of his son’s death. But the criminal network he encountered previously has not disappeared. The sequel draws him into a more dangerous confrontation involving idol smuggling, rival gangsters and a powerful family of crime bosses. S. J. Suryah plays Bodhi Kalpak, Vidya Balan appears as Kantha Kalpak, and Mithun Chakraborty plays the family’s patriarch. Suraj Venjaramoodu adds another formidable presence as Dileep.

The plot’s appeal lies in the contrast between the unassuming family man and the experienced operator who emerges when danger threatens. Rajinikanth’s character does not need to be in continuous physical combat to command attention. A measured glance, a pause before delivering a line, or the sound of his approaching footsteps can establish his authority. There is, however, a qualification to the celebratory narrative. Not every critic believes the sequel surpasses the original. The Indian Express argued that the film’s writing and humour are less effective than in the first instalment, while India Today praised its entertainment value, performances and swagger. The broad commercial success does not necessarily mean that the sequel is artistically superior.

Rajinikanth: The star is the spectacle. At the centre of the film is an actor who has spent decades cultivating a screen persona that combines flamboyance with an unusual degree of restraint. Rajinikanth’s appeal has never depended exclusively on conventional action-hero athleticism. His distinctive gestures, voice, comic timing and carefully controlled movements have become part of a cinematic language audiences recognise immediately. Nelson understands that the most effective way to use the star is not to make him run through endless action sequences but to build anticipation around his appearances.

The supporting cast amplifies this effect. Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar and Jackie Shroff bring recognisable star power, while Hrithik Roshan’s appearance adds another major attraction. These appearances create moments of collective excitement in theatres, although critics have questioned whether every guest character receives enough narrative development.

Anirudh’s music: the invisible co-star. Composer Anirudh Ravichander is the other crucial component. His energetic background score supplies the dramatic punctuation that turns an entrance into an event and a confrontation into a theatrical crescendo. The music does more than accompany the action. It helps establish the rhythm of Rajinikanth’s screen presence, allowing pauses, gestures and exchanges of dialogue to acquire a heightened emotional charge. The familiar musical identity of the Jailer franchise also gives returning viewers a sense of continuity.

Yet the soundtrack has attracted mixed reactions. Some reviewers consider the score a major strength, while others find the songs less memorable than those of the original. The distinction matters: the background music may intensify the experience even when the songs themselves do not become enduring chartbusters.

Rajinikanth’s career is also a story of recovery, although the medical history needs to be distinguished carefully from popular accounts. In 2011, he suffered a serious illness involving respiratory and gastrointestinal problems, was hospitalised in Chennai and subsequently travelled to Singapore for specialised treatment and recovery. His return to work was followed by projects including Kochadaiiyaan and Lingaa.

His kidney transplant came later. Rajinikanth disclosed in 2023 that he had undergone the transplant at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and had been taking immunosuppressant medication. He also explained that medical advice influenced his decision not to launch the political party he had previously announced. A separate episode occurred in October 2024, when he underwent a catheter-based, non-surgical procedure at Chennai’s Apollo Hospitals to treat an enlargement of the aorta. He was discharged after a stable recovery. This should not be confused with his kidney transplant.

Since the transplant, his filmography has included Petta (2019), Darbar (2020), Annaatthe (2021), Jailer (2023), Vettaiyan (2024) and Coolie (2025), demonstrating his continued professional activity. Immunosuppressants reduce the body’s ability to reject a transplanted organ, but they also increase susceptibility to infections. That makes medical supervision, infection prevention and individual assessment of physical demands important. It would be inappropriate to infer his current medical condition from his performances or assume that he personally undertakes every stunt. Modern productions can use doubles, editing, controlled choreography and visual effects to manage physical demands.

His continued ability to headline demanding commercial productions is evidence of professional longevity, not proof that a transplant recipient can safely disregard medical precautions.

Jailer 2 has brought together three powerful commercial ingredients: a recognisable hero, a story that extends an established franchise, and music and spectacle designed for communal theatrical enjoyment. Its multi-language release and ensemble of stars have widened its reach beyond Tamil-speaking audiences. The irony is that the film’s enormous success does not depend on every component being better than before. The original’s freshness may be difficult to reproduce, and the sequel’s screenplay has drawn criticism. But its star remains a formidable attraction, while its production scale and musical punctuation supply the kind of cinematic experience that encourages fans to return to theatres.

As of October 27, the reported worldwide gross has reached ₹733.35 crore, according to trade estimates. Whether its eventual lifetime total rises substantially further remains to be seen.

For Rajinikanth, the achievement represents more than another box-office milestone. It demonstrates how a performer can adapt his screen persona to age and circumstance without abandoning the qualities that made him a star. For Tamil cinema, it marks a new commercial benchmark. And for audiences, the enduring attraction remains the same: the moment the lights dim, the music swells and Tiger Muthuvel Pandian walks back into the frame. (IPA Service)
