Goa’s Health Minister Vishwajit Rane has asserted that Congress MP Rahul Gandhi once stormed into a room and began shouting at his mother, Sonia Gandhi, while Rane’s father—former Chief Minister Pratapsingh Rane—was present. Rane made this claim during a podcast interview, a clip which was later shared on X by BJP leader Amit Malviya. He emphasised that witnessing such disrespect even within the family calls into question wider attitudes toward India—capturing the essence of his bold declaration that “Goa Minister Claims Rahul Gandhi Once Shouted at His Mother”.
According to Rane, his father returned home shaken, remarking that he had “never seen Rahul Gandhi behave like that” and was left unsure what had propelled such conduct. Rane quoted him describing the behaviour as lacking manners and self-control. When pressed on Rahul’s respectful demeanour in public, Rane retorted that “respecting publicly and respecting at home are two different things”.
Rane went on to assert that a person who fails to respect his own mother is ill-equipped to honour Mother India—intentionally drawing a parallel between private familial conduct and national character.
These remarks follow soon after Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticised Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party over comments related to the Prime Minister’s late mother during the Voter Adhikar Yatra in Bihar’s Darbhanga. That episode involved a video in which youths hurled abuse at the Prime Minister and made derogatory remarks concerning his deceased mother, further fuelling the political fire surrounding respect toward mothers.
Vishwajit Rane, who previously served as a Congress MLA and minister, joined the BJP in April 2017 and has since held the Health portfolio in the Goa government.
