A crowded scene of confrontation erupted during the first phase of voting in the Lakhisarai district when Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha and MLC Ajay Kumar of the Rashtriya Janata Dal engaged in a verbal altercation outside a polling booth following an alleged attack on Sinha’s convoy. Sinha claimed his vehicle was assaulted by “goons” affiliated with the rival party, accusing them of hurling slippers, stones and cow dung, while the RJD dismissed the allegations, pointing instead to voter frustration over neglected infrastructure in the region.
Sinha, contesting for a fourth term in the constituency, held that the incident in the village of Buriyari reflected targeted intimidation of Dalit and extremely backward class voters, alleging that his polling agent had been forced away from a booth. He told officials that the convoy came under attack as he entered the village, prompting the arrival of senior police officers to stabilise the scene. Meanwhile the RJD’s spokesperson labeled Sinha’s claims “lies”, insisting the crowd’s anger stemmed from a broken drain and persistently poor roads. Sinha retorted sharply at the RJD MLC outside the booth, accusing him of “creating a ruckus under the influence of alcohol” and engaging in “hooliganism”. In response, Ajay Kumar accused Sinha of being a “criminal” distributing money to influence voters.
The confrontation came as voting surged across Bihar’s 121 constituencies in phase one, where turnout was recorded at 64.66 per cent, the highest on record for a single phase in the state. Election Commission officials said substantial deployment of staff and enhanced accessibility measures helped manage the polling, but pointed to the Lakhisarai incident as a sign of the tense environment in certain pockets. Security forces in the district escalated their presence following Sinha’s complaint and ordered an inquiry into the allegations of assault and voter interference.
Political analysts suggest that the clash illustrates the high stakes at play for the National Democratic Alliance and the INDIA bloc in a state where shifting caste dynamics and grassroots grievances are shaping campaign strategies. Sinha, representing the BJP, has portrayed the attack as a sign of the opposition’s desperation, while critics say it reflects long-standing disenchantment in local communities over unfulfilled promises. While Lakhisarai is considered a stronghold for him, insiders say the incident could energise the opposition’s narrative of local neglect and anger.
In the backdrop of the nationwide spotlight on Bihar, the incident revealed fault lines beyond party rivalry. Union ministers supporting the NDA have framed the disturbance as proof of the opposition’s use of muscle-power, whereas RJD leaders emphasised that the region’s infrastructure backlog is the real trigger. Election officials confirmed they had received 143 complaints across the state by the close of polling, with Lakhisarai among the districts flagged for potential escalation. The deputy chief electoral officer affirmed in a briefing that the matter is under investigation and urged all candidates to refrain from influencing voters or obstructing booth operations.
