Tensions between the Bharatiya Janata Party and Shiv Sena escalated following claims from the saffron party that Uddhav Thackeray had been “insulted” during a recent dinner meeting hosted by Rahul Gandhi. The controversy centred around the seating arrangement at the event, which saw Uddhav, his son Aaditya Thackeray, and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut seated at the back, away from the main discussion table.
The dinner meeting, attended by opposition leaders, was intended to address various political issues, including alleged voter fraud orchestrated by the Election Commission. However, BJP leaders quickly seized upon the seating arrangement as a point of contention, claiming it was a deliberate attempt to undermine the Shiv Sena’s stature within the opposition camp.
Several BJP leaders criticised the seating placement, labelling it a slight against Uddhav, who had previously served as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra. They argued that the gesture was disrespectful, especially considering the presence of senior political figures. The BJP’s strong condemnation of this incident amplified an already tense atmosphere between the two parties, which have been embroiled in bitter political rivalry for years.
Shiv Sena members, including Uddhav Thackeray himself, were quick to dismiss the claims, asserting that the seating arrangement was a non-issue blown out of proportion by the BJP. Senior leaders from the party refuted the notion that Uddhav felt insulted, emphasising that the dinner meeting was meant to discuss political matters, not focus on seating protocol.
Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi’s team, which hosted the dinner, remained silent on the controversy surrounding the seating arrangement. The Congress leader, who is often at the centre of such political debates, has been vocal about the importance of opposition unity in countering the BJP’s dominance in national politics. However, the seating incident has once again underlined the ongoing friction between various factions of the opposition, further complicating their efforts to form a united front ahead of upcoming elections.
The BJP’s response was also indicative of its broader strategy to target opposition unity. Party spokespersons pointed out that the event, though billed as a gathering to discuss election fraud, had devolved into a spectacle where the opposition appeared disjointed. With political infighting becoming more visible, the BJP sought to paint the opposition alliance as fragmented and unable to present a coherent challenge to its rule.
This exchange also highlights the broader tensions within Maharashtra’s political landscape, where the Shiv Sena is vying for relevance after the split with the faction led by Eknath Shinde. The Thackeray family’s strained relationship with the BJP, and their subsequent fallout with the Shinde-led faction, has left Shiv Sena grappling for its position within both state and national politics.
As for the voter fraud claims, the dinner meeting was primarily focused on raising concerns regarding the Election Commission’s alleged role in influencing election outcomes, particularly in light of the forthcoming state and national elections. The presentation by Rahul Gandhi, which outlined these allegations, attracted a mixed response from various opposition leaders. While some leaders voiced strong support for Gandhi’s claims, others, including those from regional parties, expressed hesitation over publicly criticising the Election Commission.
