Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused the Congress party of hurling abuses at him and his late mother, Heeraben, and insisted that the people — not any political figure — hold his loyalty. He said he would “swallow the poison” of insults, invoking his devotion to Lord Shiva, as he spoke to a crowd in Assam’s Darrang district during the launch of several development projects.
Modi said that people serve as his “masters, deities, and remote control,” emphasising that he has no other authority guiding him but public sentiment. He linked these comments to controversial remarks made from a Congress-RJD stage in Bihar, which he says targeted him and his mother. In response, questions arose over the role of artificial intelligence after an AI-generated video featuring his mother was circulated — an issue that has inflamed political tensions.
At the same event, Modi accused the Congress of supporting “infiltrators” during its tenure in Assam and promoting vote-bank politics that he claims disturbed the region’s demography. He contrasted that period with his government’s work, underlining infrastructure developments such as bridges over the Brahmaputra and reclamation of land from illegal occupation.
“During my government, we began to correct those wrongs and remove illegal claims,” Modi told assamese attendees. He lauded the Assam administration for its efforts under schemes like Mission Basundhara which, he said, had granted land rights to many tribal families and addressed long-standing injustices.
He also recalled that Congress leaders had mocked the Bharat Ratna conferred on Assam’s Bhupen Hazarika, calling it an award for “singers and dancers”, a phrase that stirred controversy. Modi said the insult remained in the hearts of many in Assam.
