The highly anticipated India vs Pakistan match in the Asia Cup 2025 has stirred up political controversy, surpassing the intensity of the match itself. While the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies have defended the event as an essential component of multilateral tournaments, opposition parties have raised serious objections, framing the event as insensitive and damaging to national sentiments.
The debate has been largely fuelled by the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in the loss of 26 civilian lives. This tragic incident was swiftly followed by retaliatory military action under Operation Sindoor, which intensified the already heated atmosphere surrounding the match. For many opposition leaders, the proximity of the match to the tragedy has been a major point of contention, igniting fierce protests and condemnation.
Shiv Sena leaders, including party chief Uddhav Thackeray and spokesperson Sanjay Raut, have openly condemned the planned match. Thackeray referred to the event as “shameless” and driven by profit rather than principle, labelling the situation a moral blight on India’s national dignity. The party launched the “Sindoor Raksha Abhiyan,” an initiative aimed at highlighting the sacrifices of fallen soldiers and civilians in the region. Through this, they have called for a boycott of the event, arguing that such sporting encounters should not be prioritised when national security and the lives of citizens are at stake.
Congress MP Imran Masood has also joined the chorus of discontent, questioning the government’s decision to go ahead with the match in the wake of the attack. Masood stated that holding the game so soon after the tragedy shows a lack of empathy for the victims and a disregard for the emotional state of the nation. His remarks reflect a broader sentiment within the opposition, which has been vocal about the government’s failure to strike a balance between diplomatic and national interests.
The BJP, however, has firmly supported the match, arguing that it falls under the purview of international sports governance. BJP leaders have pointed out that such fixtures are crucial for maintaining India’s competitive standing in international sports and promoting unity among nations within the Asian region. Union Minister Anurag Thakur stressed the importance of maintaining engagement through sporting events, asserting that they serve as a platform for peaceful dialogue amidst political and social unrest. His position is backed by several members of the ruling alliance, who argue that sports should be kept free from political influence and interference.
While the BJP continues to emphasise the unifying power of sport, opposition leaders have raised concerns about the potential for the match to be exploited for political gains, arguing that it could be used to downplay the gravity of the ongoing security situation. The opposition’s argument centres on the belief that the timing of such an event, so close to the tragedy, sends the wrong message to the public and undermines the sacrifices made by those affected by the violence.
