Guwahati — A Special Investigation Team has submitted a report to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma claiming that its probe into Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and his family has exposed evidence of a broader plot to undermine the nation’s sovereignty. The investigation was set up to examine the alleged links of Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh with Gogoi and associated persons.
The SIT, formed by the state government on 17 February under the leadership of Special DGP Munna Prasad Gupta, examined accusations relating to anti-India activity, criminal conspiracy, and abetment from outside India. Alongside Gupta, the SIT includes members Rosie Kalita, Pranabjyoti Goswami and Maitrayee Deka.
According to Assam CM Sarma, key findings include the participation of a British national, who is married to an Indian Member of Parliament, in what are described as “nefarious activities” alongside Sheikh. The report further alleges that the Ministry of Interior of Pakistan facilitated the travel of an MP from Assam to Pakistan.
Gogoi’s wife, Elizabeth Colburn, who holds British citizenship, is identified in the allegations. The MP has confirmed that his wife once worked in Pakistan linked to climate change work and that he himself visited Pakistan about a decade ago — but has denied any ongoing engagement with Pakistani authorities or involvement in anti-India plots.
CM Sarma has said that the SIT report spans 96 pages and was compiled with limited resources but bears “heavy truths”. He indicated that the Cabinet will now review the document, after which more of the content will be made public, excluding details considered confidential.
Congress has rejected the claims as politically motivated. Gogoi has accused Sarma of manufacturing allegations to distract from failures in governance. He described the allegations as part of a smear campaign, saying they straddle the line of fiction more than fact.
The timing of the SIT report has sparked criticism by opposition figures who contend that the issue is being amplified ahead of the 2026 Assam assembly elections. The ruling party has defended its stance by framing this probe in terms of national security, arguing that any alleged external interference must be taken seriously.
