Malaysia has declined Pakistan’s request to cancel a series of outreach programmes led by an Indian parliamentary delegation, despite Islamabad’s appeals based on shared religious ties and the ongoing Kashmir issue at the United Nations. The programmes, part of India’s Operation Sindoor initiative, were aimed at garnering international support against cross-border terrorism.
The Pakistani embassy in Kuala Lumpur urged Malaysian officials to cancel all ten scheduled events, invoking a shared Islamic identity and referencing the Kashmir matter pending at the UN. However, Malaysian authorities proceeded with the programmes, allowing the Indian delegation to engage with various stakeholders.
The delegation, led by JD MP Sanjay Kumar Jha, included members from multiple Indian political parties, such as BJP MPs Aparajita Sarangi and Brij Lal, TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee, CPI’s John Brittas, and Congress leader Salman Khurshid. Their tour encompassed Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia, focusing on building a unified international stance against terrorism.
During their visit to Malaysia, the delegation met with Malaysian leaders, think tanks, and academic institutions to discuss the implications of cross-border terrorism and India’s response through Operation Sindoor. The operation was launched following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in 26 fatalities.
In interactions with the Indian diaspora in Kuala Lumpur, delegation members emphasized the importance of global unity in combating terrorism. BJP MP Hemang Joshi highlighted the need for collective action, stating that Pakistan’s proxy wars aim to derail India’s progress. JD MP Sanjay Kumar Jha underscored India’s resilience and unity in the face of attempts to incite communal disharmony through targeted attacks.
Congress leader Salman Khurshid noted that the delegation spoke with a unified voice on national interest and terrorism, and that their message was taken seriously by Malaysian leaders. He indicated that future actions would depend on Pakistan’s response.
