Singh, 45, was killed on Saturday evening when attackers travelling in a car confronted him and Harpreet Singh alias Happy, 22, in the main bazaar of Mamdot. The two men were on a motorcycle when the assailants got out of their vehicle and opened fire, according to police.
Harpreet was wounded and taken for treatment, while Singh was declared dead after the shooting. Police said Harpreet’s statement had been recorded and a first information report registered under provisions relating to murder and the Arms Act.
Ferozepur Senior Superintendent of Police Bhupinder Singh Sidhu said investigators had identified the attackers and formed multiple teams to arrest them. Police were conducting raids at several locations on Sunday as officers worked to establish the full sequence of events and the exact role of those involved.
Sidhu said the two sides had a longstanding dispute and that an election-related rivalry had emerged as a principal line of investigation. He said the main accused had a criminal background, although police had not publicly disclosed the suspect’s identity by Sunday morning.
Investigators were also examining gunfire directed at a separate vehicle travelling near Singh and Harpreet. Vicky Maini, the newly elected president of the Mamdot Nagar Panchayat, was travelling in that vehicle with others and escaped without injury, according to accounts consistent with the police investigation.
Maini and the two men had been together before the attack and were heading towards their homes when the shooting began. His car was struck by bullets, but he avoided injury and moved into nearby shops for cover. Police have not said that Maini was the primary intended target, and investigators are assessing the firing on both the motorcycle and his vehicle.
The firing occurred in Mamdot, a town about 24 kilometres from Ferozepur, and prompted an immediate police response. Officers were examining available evidence from the market area while tracing the movements of the assailants before and after the attack.
Police said the attackers had arrived in a car and pursued the motorcycle before the shooting. Some early accounts of the incident had suggested that Singh and Harpreet were travelling in a car, but police later clarified that both men were on a motorcycle when they were fired upon.
Singh and Harpreet were taken to Civil Hospital in Ferozepur. Doctors declared Singh brought dead. Harpreet received initial treatment before being referred to a hospital in Ludhiana because of the seriousness of his injuries. Police said on Sunday that he had survived the attack and his statement formed the basis of the case registered after the shooting.
The election-related angle centres on a dispute associated with the Mamdot civic body polls. Maini had been elected president of the Nagar Panchayat, and police are investigating whether rivalries arising from that local political contest contributed directly to Saturday’s attack.
Authorities have not announced arrests or disclosed the names of the four alleged attackers. Police have also not released a detailed account of the weapons used, the number of shots fired or the route taken by the assailants as they fled.
Singh was locally associated with the Aam Aadmi Party’s political activities in the Mamdot area. Police have not indicated that his party role alone was the motive, instead pointing to a specific older dispute and its possible connection to the municipal election.
The investigation remains focused on locating the suspects, corroborating Harpreet’s account and examining evidence from the scene. Officers are also seeking to determine whether others assisted the attackers in planning the assault or escaping afterwards.
Harpreet remained under medical care on Sunday. Police had not issued a detailed update on his condition by midday, beyond confirming that he had sustained bullet injuries in the attack.
