Is Donald Trump Jr behind President-elect Donald Trump’s wish to buy, occupy Greenland? Donald Trump, the real-estate hobo, probably got influenced by Trump Jr and wants to humour his eldest. Donald Trump Jr was recently in Greenland, what’s the hurry?
Trump sought to buy Greenland in 2019, during his first term. Greenland is 80 percent ice and snow, frost-bitten, and white as Santa’s beard. Doesn’t Santa live somewhere in the icy fastness? Donald Trump Jr would know. Maybe he is not yet done with Santa and has been dreaming of an ultimate X-Mas gift.
Trump Jr has a new girlfriend. Like father, like son! President Trump must also have undue influence on Trump Jr. And President-elect Trump’s interest in Greenland must be because the continent-size icy wasteland has vast mineral resources beneath its cold hard terrain.
Now, poised for a second innings, Trump is showing fresh interest. And he could go to any extent to bring Greenland under United States control. Isn’t stubbornness one of Trump’s better-known weaknesses? Trump is the sort who will hang on to nutty ideas and make them sound like perfectly laid-out deals.
President-elect Trump is known for his deal-making prowess. After all, he is the same guy who wrote ‘Art of the Deal’, right? Last heard, Denmark, which has had control of Greenland for over 300 years, told President-elect Trump to go take a hike — Greenland is not for sale!
Greenland is pretty-much autonomous territory, but this Arctic real-estate is the world’s largest island and President-elect Donald Trump is a connoisseur of the biggest, and the finest. Besides, two of the three women he married were from this region of the world, weren’t they?
Could Melania Trump be behind President-elect Trump’s renewed bid to make Greenland United States Territory? Just like the US bought Alaska, and the US appropriated the Virgin Islands. President-elect Trump is a ‘Lady’s Man’ and there’s nothing more satisfying than to keep the thought alive!
In 2019, Trump appeared interested but was lackadaisical, laidback; what with Russia and CNN and Washington Post and New York Times — all of them dogging his every step along the way, But Trump this time appears determined and wouldn’t rule out economic power or military power to get Greenland — though hook or crook is not an option.
Naturally, Denmark is opposing and Europe also doesn’t like the US owning Greenland. Russia is keeping a gimlet eye on the deal going through and Greenlanders are a divided lot — some of them thrilled at the prospect of holding American passports; others horrified at being like the proverbial American — garrulous and graphic, yikes!
So, Greenland is not for sale and here’s Trump bent on buying it. Money is not a problem, the US under Trump is ready to spend billions, come what may. “Trump’s people” see the deal coming through — the “deal of the century!” And Trump, as everybody well knows, is a sucker for a ‘Trump Tower’ in every country with a name!
There is a Trump Tower in Mumbai. And there is another in Gurugram. Shouldn’t Greenland have one? More importantly, both Denmark and the United States are NATO allies. And Trump is ready to go to war, if necessary. How will that play out, two NATO countries waging war over a mineral-rich, top-of-the-planet, hard to miss “country not for sale?”
President-elect Donald Trump is waiting to be sworn-in to get cracking. Is Trump, like Parkinson’s, hallucinating? Making passports for Greenland’s population of 56,000 isn’t a big deal. Trump has also joked about making Canada America’s 51st state. But Canadians are not Greenlanders. Canada’s 750,000 Sikhs wouldn’t be easy to convince.
One scenario being spoken of in the context of Greenland is that “Trump loses interest, and nothing happens.” This view comes with the viewpoint that President-elect Trump is all bluster and there’s nothing hard and fast about him. Also, maybe Trump wants something else — a buffer between the US and Russia and China, two powers that want more influence in the region.
And NATO country Denmark cannot say ‘no’ to NATO country United States for far too long. As somebody put it, some day or the other, it will have to “fulfil its obligations.” What’s important is, President-elect Donald Trump’s buying interest in Greenland has put the focus on the “island” and Trump is a glutton for real-estate, right from when he was a young man — from the Panama Canal to Canada and Greenland!
