LUCKNOW: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi scored over other opposition leaders byhandling intelligently Lakhimpur Keri leading to killing of farmers. The courage of Priyanka Gandhi who reached Lucknow same night and was arrested at Sitapur on her way to Lakhimpur Kheri to meet families of victims, has generated tremendous goodwill all over the country.
The entire opposition in the country talked about the manner in which Priyanka Gandhi was detained and later on arrested, brought her and party to world focus. The manner in which Rahul and Priyanka met the families also won the hearts of the farmers and boosted the morale of party at a time when assembly elections are only few months away.
The protests by Congress workers in different parts of country especially in Rajasthan, Punjab and Chattishgarh also mobilised support of farmers. Rahul and Priyanka took the lead in meeting families of victims while other opposition leaders Akhilesh Yadav of Samajwadi Party and Satish Mishra of BSP reached Lakhimpur Kheri next day.
Since Supreme Court has taken cognizance of Lakhimpur Kheri incidents Yogi government immediately constituted a panel to investigate into the background of entire episode of farmers killing. The sitting judge will supervise the investigations as demanded by the farmers.
BJP leadership is under pressure to drop union minister for state for Home Ajay Kumar Mishra and arrest his son Asheesh againstwhom FIR was lodged.
BJP in general and Yogi government in particular came under heavy criticism when farmers alleged that union minister’s son Asheesh was driving the vehicle which caused injuries to farmers leading to their deaths.
Yogi government immediately reached an agreement with farmers and announced Rs 45 lakhs to families of each victim and job for one person of the family. Yogi government is facing tough task as it is under pressure for taking strong measures against culprits.
The manner in which BJP MP Varun Gandhi is becoming more and more critical of state government for its poor handling of farmers agitation other MPs and MLAs may follow him to avoid wrath of farmers in their constituencies. (IPA Service)
